At an elevation of 1,460 meters, the Rocca of Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennine Mountains in Abruzzo. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for the military-use purposes, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. The castle was used as a location for several films, among others ‘The Name of the Rose’.  [Ref. Wiki]

Once with a strong military presence, this ruin of La Fortezza/mountain fortress is still soaring over the small village of Civitella del Tronto on the regional border between Marche and Abruzzi, formerly between the Two Sicilian Kingdom and the Papal States.
