A narrow and winding road leads from the valley up to the medieval town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Most towns and villages in the higher regions of the Apennines suffer from depopulation. Only about 120 inhabitants are left now. Fortunately, many of the buildings are now being restored by new owners.

At an elevation of 1,460 meters, the Rocca of Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennine Mountains in Abruzzo. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for the military-use purposes, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. The castle was used as a location for several films, among others ‘The Name of the Rose’.  [Ref. Wiki]

Castrovalva is a small village on a spur of rocks of Apennine mountains, near Scanno in Abruzzo. Though it takes a lot of guts to get there, its spectacular landscape and the serene atmosphere makes you feel that the time of this wonderful village seems to stand still in the past.
