Monte Cassino is a rocky hill with 520 m (1,706 ft) altitude, located 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Rome, in Lazio, Italy. Around 529 A.D. St. Benedict of Nursia established his first monastery on the top of the hill. It is one of the few remaining territorial abbeys within the Roman Catholic Church. The hill was the famous WWII site of ‘The Battle of Monte Cassino’ in 1944.
